Wednesday Jan. 8, 2025 KUAC News stories:

1. Five elementary schools in the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District are on the chopping block this year, because of a budget shortfall and other problems.

2. High winds out of the south blew away the cold air Tuesday that had chilled the Interior last week and replaced it with unseasonably warm temperatures.

3. Arctic sea ice off Alaska's northern coast is forming later each year. And local observers and researchers say fall storms may have caused much thinner ice conditions than normal this year.

4. The Fairbanks City Council is considering giving the Fairbanks Senior Center to the North Star Council on Aging.

5. The federal government will open envelopes Friday to see who has bid on oil and gas leases to a portion of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.
